James Harlan (Renshi)

Matthew Harlan (Sensei of Ephrata)

I began training when I was 5 years old with my father.

I continued training throughout my young life.

Now that I am a adult I can see the benefits that training has done for me.

Wado-Ryu taught me to have the confidence I need in my job and at home.

I love the art and the finess that Wado teaches.

I hope that you will come and see us at either the Rec center or at the YMCA in adamstown.

I grew up in East Africa, and first became interested in the martial arts after seeing the movie, “The Karate Kid”. On a visit back to the States in 5th grade, I had the chance to take a summer martial arts class, but that was my only involvement until moving back to the States with my family in 1996. For my 16th birthday gift my parents offered to pay for karate classes. After looking around at various Karate schools I chose to join Mr. Harlan’s Wado-Ryu class in Ephrata. It was the gift that kept on giving, as I was hooked on Wado-Ryu from the very beginning…although eventually my parents said if I wanted to continue, I’d have to pay for classes myself! Through high school, on college breaks and during summers, and throughout her master’s program I have continued to train under the Harlans. My parents appreciated knowing that their daughter was learning self-defense to protect herself. I enjoy the discipline mental and physical Wado-Ryu brings.

I AM A POLICE OFFICER FOR THE CITY OF READING PA. , AND AM VERY PROUD OF WHAT THE WADO-RYU KARATE SYSTEM HAS DONE FOR ME ON AND OFF THE JOB.

I first became interested in Wado Ryu at the age of ten. My father took me to watch one of the Sensei Harlan's classes and I was fascinated. By the time the class was over I had decided that I wanted to do karate and I continue to practice and strive to learn something new everyday. Wado Ryu has impacted all areas of my life. It has not only taught me the skills necessary for self-defense, but also how to be a better person in all areas of life.
